Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance welcomed their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel Vance, born on Sunday, according to a statement the couple posted on X.
The Vances said Usha and the baby are "happy and healthy," and thanked staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where the delivery took place.
Alec joins three older siblings: sons Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, and daughter Mirabel, 4; the couple has been married since 2014.
The birth marks the first time in modern history that the nation's second family has had a child while in office, with the last known instance occurring 156 years ago when Schuyler Colfax Jr., vice president to Ulysses S. Grant, had a son in 1870.
In his new book "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," Vance wrote that Usha had long been reluctant to have another child, but her outlook shifted following the death of his friend Charlie Kirk, whose widow Erika expressed regret over not having more children.
Usha Vance told "CBS Sunday Morning" that Erika Kirk's comments were "very powerful" and "moving," though she said she had already begun opening her mind to the possibility and it wasn't the "decisive factor."
