Wisconsin officials open investigation into police killing of Corey Ruiz - BBC

Wisconsin officials have launched a homicide investigation into the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz, 38, in Madison, with the state Justice Department's Criminal Investigation Division leading the inquiry.
Police say Ruiz was shot on Wednesday after pulling out a knife during a struggle with four officers, injuring one, following a call about someone trying to enter parked vehicles in the neighbourhood.
Madison Police Chief John Patterson pledged full cooperation, stating, "We will not hide from any aspect of this investigation," while Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said the death would be "rigorously investigated."
According to accounts, Ruiz fled on a bike before officers tracked him down; after a taser failed, the injured officer fired three shots, and Ruiz later died in hospital. None of the officers wore body cameras, and all have been placed on administrative leave.
Civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, representing the family, called the death "unnecessary, unjustified and unconstitutional," noting Ruiz had diagnosed mental health and substance abuse challenges. His mother Elsa Ruiz and brother Adam described him as a loved family member and demanded justice.
Bystander footage of the incident has circulated on social media and sparked protests, though Patterson cautioned the video shows "one perspective" and that "not all perspectives are online right now." Public records reportedly show Ruiz had prior convictions including robbery by force, strangulation and drug possession.
