Father of Georgia Apalachee school shooter sentenced to 15 years in prison - Al Jazeera

Colin Gray, 55, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for a school shooting carried out by his son at Georgia's Apalachee High School.
His son Colt Gray, now 16, opened fire on September 4, 2024, killing four people: 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie. Colt was sentenced this week to life in prison without parole.
Colin Gray was convicted in March of second-degree murder in the students' deaths and manslaughter in the teachers' deaths; in Georgia, second-degree murder can include causing a child's death through cruelty to children.
Judge Nicholas Primm, who oversaw both sentencing hearings, told Gray he had "failed as a parent," but stressed he had to distinguish the father's acts from those committed by his son.
The defence had sought 10 years in prison plus 10 years of probation, while some grieving families called for the maximum sentence of 80 years; Primm said he had to set aside emotion in reaching his decision.
The case is part of a growing trend of parents being held criminally responsible for school shootings by their children, with attention focused on Gray gifting his son a SIG Sauer SIGM400 rifle as a Christmas present.
