Total solar eclipse Aug. 12, 2026 live updates — 5 days to totality - Space

On Aug. 12, 2026, Europe will witness its first total solar eclipse since 1999, as the moon's shadow crosses Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Along the narrow path of totality, day will briefly turn to twilight as the moon fully covers the sun, revealing the corona; millions elsewhere in Europe, the northeastern United States and eastern Canada will see a partial eclipse.
Space's skywatching editor Daisy Dobrijevic is reporting from aboard HX Expeditions' MS Spitsbergen, sailing from Svalbard, Norway, to East Greenland, and hopes to view totality from Scoresby Sund, the world's largest and longest fjord system.
Skywatching writer Anthony Wood is joining the citizen science DEB (Distributed Eclipse Broadcast) initiative in Valoria la Buena, northern Spain, where the eclipsed sun will sit low above the western horizon shortly before sunset, marking his first-ever total solar eclipse.
