Some relatives of Tupac Shakur left the courtroom on Tuesday before prosecutors presented autopsy photos at the Las Vegas murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, accused of orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed the rapper.
Davis, 63, has pleaded not guilty and faces a potential life sentence if convicted of murder with a deadly weapon with intent to promote or assist a criminal gang.
His attorney, Michael Sanft, called the prosecution's account "fiction" and argued Davis was not charged earlier because law enforcement knew he was "full of crap," despite Davis implicating himself in interviews and his memoir.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Lisa Gavin, a Clark County medical examiner, testified about the autopsy, describing three bullets, including one that passed through Shakur's chest and a lung, causing it to collapse and bleed; doctors removed the damaged lung in an effort to save him.
Jurors viewed graphic images showing Shakur's wounds, tattoos, and chest tubes from the six days he spent hospitalized before dying, though the photos were not included in the trial's video feed; Gavin testified as an expert because the original examiner has since died.
Shakur's cousin Zayd Akinyela chose to remain in court, telling The Associated Press that the details aid his grief and provide closure, adding that the family has "been waiting 30 years to grieve properly."
