The Boston Red Sox, positioned as buyers after a 15-game winning streak revived their playoff hopes, are reportedly willing to trade outfielder Jarren Duran before the deadline.
Duran has struggled badly at the plate this season, slashing .195/.252/.337 with 13 home runs and a .589 OPS, ranking last in the majors in batting average and second-worst in OPS among qualified hitters.
His difficulties have been compounded by emotional outbursts, including a Thursday incident in Sacramento where he directed frustration toward third base coach Chad Epperson after runner Willson Contreras was held; interim manager Chad Tracy said Duran was only cursing himself, though a source indicated otherwise.
The episode drew added scrutiny because it targeted a coach and teammate, with one league executive questioning whether Duran is "worth the headache anymore," while his trade value is diminished compared to last year's deadline.
Despite his down year, Duran still has a market thanks to his talent and 2024 breakout season, with the San Diego Padres — long linked to him and seeking a left-handed-hitting outfielder — viewed as a logical fit given his rare blend of speed and power.
