The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to keep young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar on their 53-player roster, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Aaron Rodgers is the starter at age 42, with ninth-year veteran Mason Rudolph listed as his backup, raising questions about whether the team can afford to carry four quarterbacks.
Dulac noted the decision to retain both Howard and Allar was made before Friday's preseason game and was not influenced by their performances that night.
The Steelers were shut out 17-0 by the Jets, their first preseason shutout since a 17-0 loss to the Eagles in 2016.
Howard, who started and played the entire first half, went 10-of-15 for 74 yards with two interceptions, while Allar was 11-of-23 for 110 yards and took three sacks.
Howard called the two turnovers "unacceptable," acknowledging some positives but stressing that turning the ball over and losing overshadowed them; it is considered unlikely either young quarterback would clear waivers to reach the practice squad.
