Berlin police kill suspect in Pride festival attack after manhunt - NBC News

Berlin police fatally shot the 21-year-old suspect in the deadly Pride festival attack after he allegedly charged at officers with a knife during an attempted arrest on Sunday.
The suspect was located at 6 p.m. local time at an allotment garden complex in the Spandau district; despite firefighters' resuscitation efforts, he died at the scene.
Authorities accuse him of driving a vehicle into a crowd and attacking people with a bladed weapon near the Brandenburg Gate on Saturday night, killing a woman and injuring 29 others, three of them with life-threatening injuries and eight seriously hurt.
Police identified the suspect as Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese background whom officials described as a "radicalized" member of "Islamist circles" in Berlin, with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt calling the incident an apparent Islamist attack.
Ballout was known to police and had been sentenced in May to one year and 10 months in prison, commuted to parole, for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and violating the Associations Act.
According to the Berlin Public Prosecutor General's office, he had tried to travel to Syria last year to join the Islamic State group but was arrested in Lebanon, where he was sentenced to three months in prison partly for incitement to religious and sectarian conflict before returning to Germany.
