Dave Kendall, the creator and host of MTV's late-night music video show 120 Minutes, has died; his Wikipedia page lists his age as 68, though it has not been officially confirmed and no cause of death was given.
His death was announced on social media by former colleague Matt Pinfield, who called Kendall "one of the true believers" and praised him for championing alternative music before it reached the mainstream.
Kendall created 120 Minutes in 1986 and became its host in 1988, using the two-hour program to introduce audiences to bands that would help define an era.
In 1991, he famously debuted Nirvana's video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the song credited with pushing grunge into the mainstream and reshaping rock and alternative music.
Kendall left the show in 1992, with Pinfield taking over as host in 1995; Pinfield noted that Kendall connected with fans and artists in an authentic way.
Originally from England, Kendall began his career as a music journalist and later hosted a SiriusXM radio show before returning to journalism with the Bangkok Post.
