‘The Odyssey’ Galloping to $120M in Muscular Box Office Opening - The Hollywood Reporter

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, distributed by Universal Pictures, opened strongly with $51.2 million on Friday from 3,900 North American screens, including Thursday previews, and is tracking toward a $120 million-plus domestic debut.
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the adaptation of the Greek myth earned an A CinemaScore and could become 2026's biggest live-action opening, trailing only Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million).
The film is set to claim the year's top R-rated opening and Universal's highest-ever weekend launch for an R-rated movie, with a global weekend projection of $257.8 million, including $137.3 million from 73 international markets.
The debut exceeds studio expectations, which had targeted a domestic opening in the mid-$80 million to $100 million range against a $250 million production budget.
The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway (as Penelope), Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, with Nolan and Emma Thomas producing for Syncopy.
Shot entirely on IMAX cameras, the film is drawing cinephiles to premium formats, with an estimated $30 million from domestic IMAX screens and $22 million internationally; it ranks as Nolan's third-biggest domestic opening behind The Dark Knight Rises ($160 million) and The Dark Knight ($158 million), and his biggest global launch.
