Disney Predicts ‘Spider-Man’ Record Opening “Bodes Well” for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ - The Hollywood Reporter

Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro told the company's quarterly earnings call that the record-breaking opening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day "bodes well" for Marvel's upcoming team-up film Avengers: Doomsday, which opens Dec. 18.
D'Amaro congratulated Sony, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios on the launch, noting that 65 years after his debut, Spider-Man remains one of the most popular characters across consumer products, parks and streaming, and citing Disney Plus as central to the strategy.
Avengers: Doomsday was already expected to perform strongly, having drawn $19 million in advance ticket sales for premium format theaters since going on sale last month.
The Spider-Man success counters recent worries about superhero fatigue, following Marvel's last three films — Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps — which each earned hundreds of millions yet were viewed as softer than typical Marvel grosses.
Brand New Day reportedly reached $1 billion out of the gate and introduces Sadie Sink as mutant Jean Grey; while Sink and star Tom Holland are not officially announced for Doomsday, the film features several legacy X-Men characters, fueling speculation about their appearances in Doomsday or its sequel Secret Wars.
D'Amaro also acknowledged that The Mandalorian and Grogu and Moana disappointed in ticket sales, but said the titles still boosted Disney's bottom line through retail sales, gaming and theme park attendance.
