Stefon Diggs has agreed to sign with the Washington Commanders for the upcoming season, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because it had not been officially announced.
A Gaithersburg, Maryland native, Diggs joins Washington for his 12th NFL season and reportedly can earn up to $12 million, bolstering an offense led by quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The 32-year-old wideout spent last season with New England, recording 99 catches for 1,123 yards and five touchdowns across 21 games during the Patriots' run to the Super Bowl.
New England released Diggs in March, and he went unsigned in free agency while facing strangulation and other criminal charges tied to a dispute with his former private chef; he was found not guilty in May, and the NFL determined in June he would face no discipline under its personal conduct policy.
Washington had a clear need at receiver, with in-house options Treylon Burks and Luke McCaffrey leaving top target Terry McLaurin likely to face frequent double teams without another proven pass catcher.
The signing could end pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk, a friend of Daniels who remains under contract with San Francisco and said in June he would join Washington if the 49ers released him.
