2 soldiers killed as Apache helicopter from Fort Hood crashes in Salado, Texas - CBS News

Two U.S. Army soldiers were killed when an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter based out of Fort Hood crashed in Salado, Texas, on Wednesday, according to the Army and local officials.
Bell County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Bill Coleman said the two people on board were pronounced dead at the scene around 2:30 p.m. local time, and described it as clearly a "violent crash."
The helicopter went down in a field and did not strike any homes or other structures, Coleman noted.
Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, confirmed the aircraft's origin and said the immediate priority was securing the site and supporting response efforts while awaiting further information.
No cause was immediately identified, and the victims' names were being withheld until 24 hours after their families are notified.
The crash sparked a wildfire that was still burning out of control as of about 3:30 p.m. local time, with a tanker aircraft dropping fire retardant near the site southwest of Salado, located roughly 70 miles north of Austin.
