Britain's government on Monday called on TikTok and other social media platforms to remove viral videos "celebrating" dangerous driving, following a crash that killed two police officers and five young men in northeastern England.
Officers Matthew Blades and Tom Clough died Saturday when a Volkswagen was driven the wrong way along a road and struck their vehicle; the five people in the car—three boys aged 17 and 18 and two 23-year-old men—were also pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision comes amid rising concern over social media clips showing deliberately dangerous driving, and British media reports suggest one of those who died in the Volkswagen may have previously posted such a video.
Defense Minister Luke Pollard told the BBC the government has instructed platforms to "step up" and take down content that glorifies reckless driving, framing it as a chance for companies that argue they can police themselves to prove it.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham's office branded the glorification of dangerous driving "utterly disgraceful," and said the UK media regulator has the government's full backing to take tough action against platforms that fail their legal duties.
Police said the crash vehicle used a cloned number plate to avoid detection, and 12 people were arrested Monday over suspected criminal activity, including firearm possession, before the crash; TikTok said its policies strictly prohibit content that could cause significant physical harm.
