49ers expect Kyle Shanahan to be cleared from concussion long before season opener - NBC Sports

The 49ers held their opening news conference Saturday with General Manager John Lynch appearing alone on the podium after the team announced coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car wreck that left him with serious injuries, including a concussion.
Shanahan sustained a broken nose, three ribs and his hand, required 40 stitches to his face, and was diagnosed with a severe concussion following the July 14 collision with an SUV near his California home.
Lynch said Shanahan is "doing good," noting he has bumps, bruises and lingering effects from the concussion, and that the other driver appears to be all right based on second-hand information.
The team is placing Shanahan in its concussion protocol—typically used for players rather than staff—with Dr. Anthony "Nino" Saglimbeni and the medical staff dictating his return timeline.
Shanahan, who has already visited the team facility, is expected to have a limited role to start camp that could include attending some practices, while offensive line coach and assistant head coach Chris Foerster handles head coaching duties in his absence.
Lynch expressed confidence Shanahan will be cleared well before the season opener against the Rams in Australia, emphasizing the team's priority is the coach's well-being and taking whatever time is necessary.
