Kylian Mbappé became the all-time leading World Cup goal scorer, netting his 21st and 22nd career goals in the competition during France's 6-4 third-place playoff loss to England on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida, overtaking Lionel Messi.
France fell 4-0 behind in the first half before Mbappé sparked a comeback with a 48th-minute finish, adding another in the 66th, while Bradley Barcola also scored for Didier Deschamps' side.
England held on thanks to a Bukayo Saka hat trick and a sixth goal from Jude Bellingham in what was described as an instant World Cup classic.
The 27-year-old Mbappé now leads the tournament's Golden Boot race with 10 goals in North America, ahead of Messi's eight.
Messi, now 39 and playing in his sixth World Cup, can reclaim the record when Argentina face Spain in Sunday's final; he had earlier surpassed Miroslav Klose with goals against Austria and further strikes versus Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt.
Mbappé said he would have preferred not to hold the record if it meant playing in the final instead, adding that Messi "will score for sure" on Sunday, as he reflected on his rise since winning the 2018 World Cup and scoring a hat trick in the 2022 final defeat to Argentina.
