LIV Golf captain Martin Kaymer confirms lucrative event ‘highly likely’ to be cancelled - Today's Golfer

LIV Golf's $40 million Team Championship, scheduled for next month at The Cardinal course in Michigan, is now "highly unlikely" to go ahead, according to Cleeks GC captain Martin Kaymer.

Kaymer estimated only a "five percent" chance the event will happen as planned, noting that necessary infrastructure has not yet been built on the course.

The comments followed a captain's meeting at LIV Golf UK on Tuesday, held ahead of the league's return after a seven-week hiatus that began when LIV postponed a New Orleans event in late June over concerns about high temperatures and course conditions.

LIV chief Scott O'Neil told players that investors were interested in saving the league and is fundraising for $350 million after the Saudi Public Investment Fund announced it would withdraw its backing at the end of the season, with a reported September deadline to secure funding beyond 2026.

Kaymer, a former world No.1, said players wanted clearer decisions about next year but that O'Neil could not provide them because the outcome depends heavily on investors, adding that nothing is certain until a signature is in place.

While the regular season finale at Chatham Hills in Indianapolis is "most likely" to proceed, there is speculation it could be converted into a team event to replace Michigan, a prospect Kaymer described as a shame given it would further reduce individual competition.
