California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife earned between $1.7 million and $2 million annually from 2022 through 2024, paying roughly half a million dollars per year in combined federal and state taxes, according to over 700 pages of tax filings released by his office.
The disclosure offers a look at Newsom's finances as he prepares to leave office and weighs a possible 2028 presidential bid; returns for 2025 were not released because the couple filed for an extension due in October.
The Newsoms' income has stayed relatively steady since he took office in 2019, when they reported $1.7 million. In 2021, they earned $4.2 million and paid over $1 million in taxes after selling a Marin County home for nearly $6 million.
The release follows U.S. Justice Department investigations into the Newsoms, announced last month, which the governor has criticized as politically motivated. It marks the first time he has released returns since 2022.
Newsom made nearly $200,000 a year as governor, but most income comes from winery and restaurant businesses placed in a blind trust, including the PlumpJack Group, now run by his sister and cousin.
His wife, film director Jennifer Siebel Newsom, lost money most years from her production company Girls Club Entertainment, maker of the 2011 documentary "Miss Representation." The couple paid between about $14,000 and $44,000 annually in childcare for three of their four children.
