Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russia killed at least eight people overnight, hitting military, energy and civilian infrastructure, with Russia's Defense Ministry claiming its forces downed 635 drones during the assault.
Two people died in Engels on the Volga River when drones struck residential buildings, while a nearby apartment complex in Saratov was also damaged.
Three people were reported killed and two injured in the Udmurtia region, some 1,300 kilometers from Ukraine, and another three killed and five injured in Belgorod, according to local officials.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv targeted an oil refinery in Saratov and a military base in Engels that houses Russian long-range bombers, adding that forces also struck an oil depot in the Kaluga region.
Ukraine again targeted online retailer Wildberries, striking a logistics warehouse in Samara more than 800 kilometers from the front line; Kyiv, which accuses the retailer of aiding Russia's military, has hit nearly a dozen of its warehouses since July 18.
The strikes, described by Zelenskyy as an answer to Russian aggression that takes the war "back to where it came from," are seen as an effort to pressure Russia's weakened economy and its citizens to help end the invasion launched on February 24, 2022.
