Podcast listening is now a daily habit for a huge share of adults, audiobook subscriptions keep climbing, and a growing number of students default to listening their way through assigned material rather than opening the book. Meanwhile, something quieter is happening in the background: reading itself is slipping. International reading-comprehension assessments have trended downward across most wealthy nations, and in some countries fewer than one in six older teenagers say they read something — on paper or on a screen — every single day.

That decline doesn't land evenly. The gap between strong and weak readers widens fastest among students from lower-income households and those learning in a second language, exactly the group a level playing field would help most. So the reading-versus-listening question isn't just personal preference. It touches literacy equity, curriculum design, and how millions of people will keep building knowledge for the rest of their lives — while, for many others, audio remains the only practical doorway into books at all.

Two routes, one destination

Reading and listening are often treated as rival skills, but researchers who study the brain's language systems describe them more like two routes converging on the same place: meaning. Cognitive scientist Stephanie Del Tufo, who studies spoken and written language processing at the University of Delaware, explains that reading recruits the brain to recognize letter shapes, match them to speech sounds, and link those sounds into meaning across sentences — all while the reader sets the pace. Listening runs on a different clock entirely. Because spoken words vanish the instant they're said, the brain leans harder on memory to hold onto what it just heard, and has to untangle a continuous, blended stream of sound into distinct words in real time, while also tracking tone, speaker identity, and context.

The two systems turn out to be more entangled than they look. A 2021 review of the developing reading brain found that learning to read literally reshapes the auditory regions used for listening, forging new links between the brain's visual word-recognition areas and its speech-processing regions. Becoming a fluent reader changes how the brain listens — the two skills grow up together rather than living in separate lanes.

The pace advantage

Where the evidence tilts most clearly is around complexity and control. A large 2022 meta-analysis spanning decades of comparison studies concluded that reading produces stronger comprehension than listening overall — and that the advantage is largest specifically when readers can set their own pace. Being able to slow down on a dense paragraph, flip back a page, or simply pause and think seems to matter more than the format itself.

Vivian Kjelland, who researches learning strategies at the University of Agder, sees this most clearly in detail-heavy subjects like anatomy or physiology, where dozens of interlocking facts need to be held in mind at once — material she believes is genuinely harder to absorb through listening alone, even when it's fascinating. Reading researcher Marte Pupe Støyva at the University of Stavanger, who has filmed university students reading in real time, has documented exactly what that self-pacing looks like: readers stop constantly, reread lines, underline, and circle back — a rhythm of starting and stopping that listening rarely allows for, even with modern rewind and speed controls.

What the background steals

Context turns out to be a major hidden variable. A 2026 University of Arkansas study assigned undergraduates to either read or listen to the same short story, then randomly checked in on their attention throughout. Listeners' minds wandered nearly twice as often as readers' — reporting distraction on roughly 30 percent of check-ins, against about 17 percent for readers. The same study found readers rated the story as more enjoyable and immersive, an effect that traced back almost entirely to that gap in mind-wandering.

It lines up with earlier classroom research: when college students were given a podcast or a written article to review on their own time, the group that listened scored measurably worse on a follow-up quiz — many admitted to clicking around online while the audio played. Listening rarely happens in a vacuum; it happens during commutes, chores, workouts. Reading, almost by definition, asks for the room's full attention, and that asymmetry shows up directly in what people keep.

A doorway, not a downgrade

None of this makes listening a lesser cousin of reading. A doctoral thesis from the University of Borås tracking audiobook habits across nearly 80,000 users found something that upends a common assumption: it was young men in their late teens — not the demographic long assumed to read the most — who logged the heaviest audiobook use, averaging around 100 minutes a day, woven into commutes, workouts, and chores. The researcher behind that work argues for retiring the idea that reading only happens with the eyes, proposing that people can just as legitimately read by listening, or read by touch.

That framing matters most for the people who need it. Speech-language researcher Anna Eva Hallin at the Karolinska Institutet points out that listening is a genuine lifeline for people with dyslexia and related reading difficulties, and that listening skill itself can be trained rather than being fixed. For that population, and for people with visual impairments, audio isn't a workaround for reading — it functions as reading.

Combining both, especially for language learners

There's one case where mixing formats appears to beat either one alone: acquiring a new language. Research tracking teenagers picking up English outside the classroom found that watching un-subtitled television was linked to stronger performance in both listening comprehension and reading comprehension, suggesting the two skills reinforce rather than compete while someone is still building basic fluency. Developers building extensive-reading and extensive-listening programs for language learners have reached similar conclusions, pairing graded readers with matching audio episodes precisely because seeing and hearing the same input together appears to cement vocabulary and sentence structure more securely than either channel manages alone.

The step nobody talks about

Perhaps the most consistent finding across every study is the least glamorous one: neither reading nor listening sticks without retrieval. Research on effective study habits points to active recall — closing the book, or switching off the audio, and trying to explain in your own words what you just took in — as the step that actually locks information into memory. Do that a few times, spaced days or weeks apart, after either a chapter read or a chapter's worth of listening, and the format you originally used starts to matter far less than whether you made yourself retrieve it afterward.
