β¨ Key Highlights
- NASA announced Wednesday that Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman and pilot Victor Glover will step down from active astronaut duty, transitioning to emeritus roles supporting the moon exploration program.
- As emeritus astronauts, the pair will mentor and train NASA workers and share their expertise for future lunar missions, an approach the agency described as a new way to leverage experience.
- The two led the Artemis II mission that flew around the moon in April with two other astronauts, setting a new distance record for humanity.
- Glover has taken a leadership position at his alma mater, California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, effective Sept. 1, where he will shape long-term strategies and encourage students to pursue science and engineering; Wiseman's future plans were not disclosed.
- With crewmate Jeremy Hansen having retired from the Canadian Space Agency in July, Christina Koch is now the only Artemis II crew member remaining on NASA's active astronaut roster.
- Wiseman, a retired Navy captain selected in 2009, spent more than five months aboard the International Space Station in 2014 and later served as chief astronaut; Glover, a former Navy test pilot chosen in 2013 and a Cal Poly graduate, piloted a nearly six-month SpaceX crew mission to the station in 2020-2021.
- NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised the two for taking on one of the most challenging missions in human spaceflight and helping return America to the lunar environment.
