Congo's ongoing Ebola outbreak has killed more than 2,300 people, making it the deadliest ever recorded in the Central African nation, according to government data released ahead of Monday.
The outbreak has produced 4,945 cases and 2,325 deaths, narrowly surpassing the country's 2018-2020 outbreak, which recorded 2,299 deaths out of 3,481 cases, marking Congo's 17th outbreak overall.
Described as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history, it reached the 2,000-death mark almost three times faster than the 2014-16 West Africa outbreak, which remains the deadliest on record with over 11,000 deaths.
Recent figures show 101 new cases and 33 deaths in a single 24-hour period, with over 1,000 people recovered and 730 still in hospitals or isolation.
Trish Newport, an emergency coordinator with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), cited limited community engagement as a key challenge, noting that awareness of symptoms and appropriate responses is not reaching every affected area.
The epicenter is Ituri province in eastern Congo, where some families have lost up to 15 relatives, and there are no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo virus strain driving the outbreak.
