Fugitive in 1973 torture and murder of iconic singer Victor Jara is captured in Chile - CBS News

Chilean police have captured Nelson Haase Mazzei, an 80-year-old former military officer convicted of the 1973 kidnapping and murder of iconic singer-songwriter Victor Jara, according to a Justice Department statement released Sunday.
Jara, a leading figure in the New Chilean Song movement and author of "El derecho de vivir en paz," was tortured and killed with 44 bullets on September 16, 1973, at age 40, just five days after Augusto Pinochet's coup against President Salvador Allende.
Court documents from 2023 described the severe physical torture Jara endured, noting the worst blows were inflicted on his face and hands.
In August 2023, weeks before the 50th anniversary of the coup, seven retired officers were sentenced to prison terms of eight to 25 years for Jara's death; Haase fled when his 25-year sentence was announced and was later located in the Los Lagos region, about 590 miles south of Santiago.
Among the other convicted men, General Hernan Chacon, 85, died by suicide during his 2023 arrest, while five remain imprisoned, including Pedro Barrientos, who was detained by ICE during a Florida traffic stop in 2023.
Jara is regarded as among the most prominent victims of Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990), which claimed roughly 3,200 killed or disappeared; the stadium where he was detained was renamed in his honor in 2003.
