'It’s all burnt': Spokane wildfire survivors tell their stories - USA Today

Wildfires that swept across the Spokane, Washington, area on Aug. 1 destroyed an estimated 700 structures within hours, leaving residents in shock over the sudden devastation.
As of Aug. 4, three large wildfires had burned more than 16 square miles and forced over 65,000 people to evacuate, with all three blazes at 0% containment according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
Police arrested a 37-year-old man accused of starting the Old Trails Fire, the largest of the three fires, which spread rapidly amid unusually high temperatures, drought, and strong winds.
Jason Dalton, 35, lost his childhood home, where he had hoped to bring his own children to enjoy the backyard and pool; he expressed particular grief for his mother, who lost everything.
Nikolas Shover, 26, described spotting flames across the Spokane River before winds pushed the fire up the hillside toward his Indian Trail home, prompting him to flee with his wife, Claire, 27, and their 4-month-old daughter.
The Shovers watched online videos of their street engulfed in flames before confirming their house was gone, with Claire describing the experience as feeling like "a bad dream" and the family still feeling numb.
