A total solar eclipse swept across parts of Europe on Wednesday, Aug. 12, marking continental Europe's first encounter with totality since 1999, as the sun, moon and Earth aligned to briefly darken portions of the sky.
The path of totality began near the North Pole and streaked southward across Greenland, Iceland, Spain and a small area of Portugal, with darkness lasting no more than a couple of minutes at its peak.
In Spain, millions gathered in cloudless towns for prime views; in Medinaceli, a Roman-era hilltop town in northeast Spain, sky watchers claimed grassy viewing spots hours ahead and packed local restaurants and bars.
Observers in far northern parts of the U.S. and Canada could catch a partial eclipse as the moon appeared to nibble the sun, though the event was far shorter than North America's dramatic 2024 total eclipse.
North America previously enjoyed two coast-to-coast eclipses: the Great American Eclipse of 2017, offering over two minutes of totality from Oregon to South Carolina, and the 2024 eclipse, which nearly doubled that duration on a diagonal path from Mexico's Pacific coast past Newfoundland.
The continent's next coast-to-coast total solar eclipse won't arrive until 2045, while Spain, North Africa and the Middle East are set for a longer stretch of totality next August; viewers were reminded to protect their eyes with certified eclipse glasses.
