Islam Makhachev (29-1 MMA, 18-1 UFC) earned his first welterweight title defense by outlasting Ian Machado Garry (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the UFC 330 main event at Philadelphia's Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Makhachev secured a decision win by controlling Machado Garry on the ground in Round 5, but sustained notable damage, getting cut and marked up while failing on several takedown attempts.
Joe Rogan said Makhachev was "really tested in ways we haven't seen him tested before," noting he lacked the usual level of control and dominance against a bigger opponent.
Rogan expressed concern about looming contenders Carlos Prates and Michael Morales, describing both as massive men with "nuclear power," in contrast to Machado Garry, a technical striker with only three stoppages in 10 octagon wins.
Rogan also pointed to the physical toll of the move to 170 pounds, comparing how easily Makhachev dominated lightweights like Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira to the greater "tax" of holding down larger welterweights.
