Nepal-China flooding latest: Rescue efforts resume after newly formed lake threatens fresh deluge - CNN

More than 600 people have been killed in Nepal following catastrophic flooding along its border with China, with around 2,500 people missing across both countries, including dozens of Americans and other foreign nationals.
Chinese state media reported no sign of survivors at a border crossing engulfed by the flood wave, while Nepali health officials described a "whole village that seems to have been washed away" and residents in dire need of support.
Officials are closely monitoring a second newly formed lake in the mountains near the flood zone, raising fears of further flooding as more rain is expected in affected areas over the weekend.
Jeffrey Kargel, senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, called the second lake "extremely concerning," warning that if it burst its banks the water could combine with a downstream landslide-dammed lake and "burst out very, very rapidly."
The first barrier lake, formed after the initial landslide, broke its banks on Friday; Kargel said rescue crews must be ready to move to higher ground at any moment as "alarm bells are ringing."
CNN teams visited Dhunge Bazaar, one of the towns most devastated by the flood, witnessing ruined neighborhoods and families searching for missing relatives as the 72-hour "golden window" for survival neared its end, with the torrent estimated at 500,000 large dump truck loads of rock and ice.
