AI slop movies are the new direct-to-video cash grabs - The Verge

Film studio Fountain 0 announced on Tuesday an AI-generated reimagining of Homer's classic titled Odysseus: The Fall, which it plans to offer for digital rental or purchase later in the summer.
The project comes from director Ash Koosha, who previously worked with the startup on Dreams of Violets, an AI-generated docudrama about the civil unrest and state violence in Iran between late 2025 and early 2026.
The timing appears calculated to ride the wave of publicity surrounding Christopher Nolan's new adaptation of The Odyssey, arriving in theaters this weekend.
Nolan's film is projected to earn between $80 million and $100 million within its first few days, drawing audiences eager to see his use of cutting-edge filmmaking technology on the Homeric epic.
The Verge's Charles Pulliam-Moore frames these AI-generated releases as the modern equivalent of direct-to-video cash grabs, arguing the AI hype machine is fueled by attention-grabbing stunts and "stolen valor" that piggyback on legitimate productions.
