More than 250,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain as wildfires sweep through southwestern Europe, with at least one death reported in Valencia, Spain.
In Spain, hundreds of firefighters are working to stop two blazes west of Madrid, in Ávila and the Madrid region, from merging; the fires have scorched nearly 45,000 hectares and forced around 90,000 people to evacuate or shelter.
The two Spanish fires are being touching along a 14-to-15-kilometer strip near San Martín de Valdeiglesias, prompting Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to warn "the night is not going to be easy," while Spain deployed 2,737 personnel, 426 ground vehicles and 21 aircraft, supported by crews from Greece, Italy and Portugal.
In France, authorities ordered new overnight evacuations in the Gironde department, directing residents of at least five towns toward Bordeaux, where thousands are sheltering; around 30 fires were burning simultaneously in the southwest, affecting Gironde and neighboring Landes.
France's prime minister cautioned that the coming hours "may be difficult" as conditions shift, with elderly evacuees and families among those waiting in shelters and the fires disrupting daily life, including the Tour de France.
Fires are also burning in Italy, the UK and other parts of Europe, with the blazes fueled by climate change-driven heat waves that set the stage for more intense fire seasons.
