Zelensky warns air defenses are being overwhelmed as Russia pounds Ukraine, killing 9 - CNN

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed calls for Western air defenses after an overnight Russian attack killed at least nine people and wounded 30, including four children, with strikes hitting Kyiv and surrounding regions, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Only one of 27 ballistic missiles launched by Russia was intercepted, marking the second major aerial assault in two days as the Kremlin appears to be exploiting Kyiv's shortage of key defense systems.
Ukraine faces a critical shortfall of US-made interceptors for Patriot systems, the only defense capable of downing certain advanced ballistic missiles, prompting Zelensky to write on Telegram that the lack of interceptors "only encourages Russia to carry out such deadly strikes."
The attack came hours after US President Donald Trump backed away from a public pledge, made at a NATO summit in Turkey last month, to allow Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot interceptors.
Trump said he was hesitant to share the technology, telling a Cabinet meeting at Camp David it was "a hard thing to give away," and citing concerns Ukraine could someday use the interceptors against the US, though he acknowledged that was unlikely.
Earlier in the week, a ballistic missile struck a house in the village of Radushne in the Dnipro region, killing at least six family members including four children, while a CNN team on the ground heard at least three waves of explosions in the capital overnight, with people trapped in a residential building in the Solomyanske district.
