President Donald Trump threatened on Truth Social to temporarily withdraw Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general, saying he could reintroduce it after GOP Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina leave office in January.
The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed a vote to advance Blanche's nomination after Cornyn and Tillis raised objections, and a single Republican "no" vote would sink it in committee.
The two senators' concerns center on Trump's settlement with the IRS over the leak of his tax returns, with Cornyn saying the president is "mistaken" if he believes the worries are limited to just him and Tillis.
Tillis called Trump's proposal "about as politically tone deaf a posture as I have seen in this administration," warning it would hand journalists and Democrats "gold to mine" ahead of the election.
Both senators pressed for the so-called 1776 fund provisions to be removed in writing, with Cornyn suggesting the administration was seeking "an out" to revive the settlement's provisions later, contradicting Blanche's hearing testimony.
With midterm elections less than 100 days away, control of the Senate come January remains uncertain, and a Democratic majority could block Blanche's confirmation altogether.
