Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 84, announced on August 6, 2026, that he has been discharged from a rehabilitation center to continue recovering at home following a fall he suffered in mid-June.
He said he would keep working from home but did not offer a timeline for returning to the Senate, which is expected to begin a five-week recess soon.
McConnell was hospitalized June 14 and had not appeared in public afterward, with his staff declining to answer questions about his condition, prompting transparency calls from figures including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
Police scanner audio obtained by NBC News indicated paramedics performed CPR on someone experiencing a "cardiac arrest" at his address, though McConnell said July 12 he was "briefly unconscious" after a fall, ruling out broken bones, a concussion, heart attack, or stroke, and noted a mild case of pneumonia.
Since his hospitalization he has missed 51 Senate floor votes and is expected to miss the vote to confirm Todd Blanche for attorney general if it occurs this week.
McConnell, who is retiring at the end of his term in January, has faced recurring health issues, including a weeklong hospitalization for flu-like symptoms in February, a 2023 concussion, public freezing episodes in 2023, and a fractured shoulder in 2019.
