A Los Angeles County grand jury has indicted 32-year-old Nick Reiner on murder charges in the deaths of his parents, director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, adding an allegation that he was lying in wait before attacking them.
The couple were stabbed to death at their home in the upscale Brentwood section of Los Angeles on Dec. 14, and Nick Reiner was arrested within hours and charged two days later.
The indictment was returned July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, when Reiner entered a not guilty plea; the grand jury route lets prosecutors bypass California's preliminary hearing, where evidence would be publicly aired.
The lying-in-wait allegation is meant to show premeditation, and combined with a murder conviction would make Reiner eligible for the death penalty, though prosecutors said they have not decided whether to seek it.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman called the killings "a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted," and said the indictment moves the case closer to trial and justice.
Prosecutors have not disclosed a possible motive, and the case has remained largely secret, with a court order blocking the county medical examiner from releasing autopsy reports; the indictment also includes a special allegation of using a knife, which could lead to a stiffer sentence. Separately, Reiner is seeking money from a trust his parents established for him to help fund his defense.
