U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham exchanged messages with someone impersonating Susie Wiles, White House chief of staff to Donald Trump, before growing suspicious that the contact was fraudulent, according to four officials cited by POLITICO.
One person briefed on the matter said a "few messages" were exchanged after Burnham entered No. 10, but described them as "of no significance," while Downing Street declined to comment, citing national security.
The British embassy in Washington was sufficiently concerned to raise the incident with the White House, and there were fears within the U.K. government that Wiles' phone had been hacked again.
A White House official pushed back, stating the incident "had nothing to do with the Chief of Staff's devices being hacked."
The episode echoes a prior case in which the White House and FBI investigated after senators, governors, and U.S. business executives received texts and calls from someone posing as Wiles, whose cellphone contacts the Wall Street Journal reported had been hacked.
