Democrat Aisha Wahab wins the special election for Eric Swalwell’s former California district - NBC News

Democratic state Sen. Aisha Wahab won the special election in California's 14th District, NBC News projects, and will serve out the remaining months of former Rep. Eric Swalwell's term.
Swalwell resigned from Congress in April amid allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied, triggering the contest.
Wahab defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez, a member of the Bay Area Rapid Transit board, in the one-on-one runoff after neither secured a majority in the June 16 primary.
Wahab dominated the initial primary with 43% to Hernandez's 17%, but Tuesday's election was tighter, with Wahab leading 53% to 47% with 95% of the expected vote counted.
A super PAC aligned with the pro-Israel American Israel Public Affairs Committee spent roughly $2.5 million against Wahab, who has called Israel's conduct in Gaza genocide; Hernandez was the only candidate who did not answer "yes" when asked at an April forum whether Israel was committing genocide.
The race is the latest shaped by AIPAC-linked spending, which has aided winning House candidates in Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky and Maryland but backed losing bids in New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan, where more than $30 million supported Rep. Haley Stevens in her failed Senate primary against Abdul El-Sayed.
