Tropical Storm Moke was forecast to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Hawaii on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, passing just south of the Big Island and later well south of the smaller islands early the following week.
The storm carried maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving west at 15 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center, which expected it to begin weakening Sunday.
Tropical storm warnings covered waters around Hawaii, and a flash flood watch was issued for parts of the Big Island, with rainfall totals projected at 5 to 10 inches and up to 15 inches in some areas.
Forecasters warned of potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides on the windward and southeast Big Island, particularly in steep terrain and locations recently battered by Hurricane Lala.
Hawaii was still recovering from Hurricane Lala, whose eye passed about 30 miles off the Big Island the previous weekend, bringing wind gusts over 80 mph and heavy rain; Kapalua in Maui County recorded 48 inches of rain.
Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen urged residents to prepare, noting that even light to moderate rain could trigger flooding, debris, downed trees and power outages given already saturated ground and an above-average hurricane season.
