Measles outbreak declared in 3 Maryland counties - WBAL-TV

The Maryland Department of Health declared a measles outbreak in Carroll, Cecil, and St. Mary's counties, alongside 14 newly confirmed cases among unvaccinated residents, with no public exposures identified.
Officials said there is no evidence of widespread community transmission, as most cases occurred among household contacts, and the department is working with county health departments to promote vaccination.
As of Monday, Maryland recorded 31 confirmed measles cases this year, with 27 confirmed since July 15 in unvaccinated residents, including 13 in St. Mary's, eight in Carroll, five in Cecil, and one in Charles County.
Four earlier cases confirmed before July 15 involved residents of Anne Arundel (two), Baltimore (one), and Prince George's (one) counties.
Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani said measles is highly contagious but the overall risk remains low for fully vaccinated people, urging Marylanders to check their vaccination status and get up to date to protect the most vulnerable.
The CDC reports kindergarten vaccination exemptions are at a record high nationally, and in Maryland nonmedical exemptions for the 2025-2026 school year outnumber medical ones; Carroll County Education Association president Celeste Jordan stressed vaccinating to protect those who cannot be immunized and offered to help with school messaging.
