An 8-year-old girl, Lillian Smart, has died after contracting a suspected brain-eating amoeba in Louisiana, her family confirmed, saying her brain injuries were too severe for her body to recover.
The child was hospitalized with Naegleria fowleri and received care at Ruston Hospital, according to the Louisiana Department of Health, which first announced the case on Wednesday.
Officials are urging residents to avoid Henderson Lake, where a cyanobacterium, or blue-green algae bloom, was detected using satellite imagery.
Lillian's family shared their grief through a public Facebook group called "Love for Lillian," writing that they are heartbroken and crediting their faith for strength during the tragedy.
The CDC describes Naegleria fowleri as a free-living amoeba that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers and hot springs, infecting people when contaminated water travels up the nose to the brain and causing primary amebic meningoencephalitis.
Nearly everyone who contracts the infection dies, and health officials warn that while most algae are harmless, certain types of cyanobacteria can produce toxins dangerous to both people and animals.
