President Trump said Iran was hit "very hard" as the US completed a ninth consecutive night of strikes, with explosions reported across Iran early Monday local time, deepening fears of a wider regional conflict.
The US reported the death of another American service member, killed in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone. US Central Command also said it located unidentified remains in Jordan, where a separate Iranian attack killed two US troops and left one missing.
US allies across the Middle East reported a fresh wave of attacks Sunday: a power and desalination plant in Kuwait was struck for a second straight day, while air defenses intercepted strikes in Jordan and Bahrain.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the northern Iraq incident as an "accident" during the decommissioning of a downed Iranian drone, noting that "nothing the military does is safe." He said the Jordan strike occurred when a single missile "leaked through" after nearly all incoming missiles were shot down.
The total number of US service members who have died in the nearly five-month war with Iran now stands at 17, according to Rubio.
CENTCOM said its latest strikes targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks, while Iran launched another wave of missiles at "enemy targets," according to state media IRNA. Rubio added that the US remains open to diplomacy with Iran.
