UAE extradites alleged international crime boss Daniel Kinahan to Ireland - Al Jazeera

Alleged Irish cartel boss Daniel Kinahan, 49, was charged in Dublin with directing a criminal organisation after being extradited from the United Arab Emirates, where he had lived openly for about a decade.
Kinahan, accused of running one of the world's largest drug, weapons smuggling and money laundering operations, appeared before the Special Criminal Court late on Sunday after arriving from Dubai aboard an Irish government jet.
A major security operation surrounded his arrival, with armed police, the military and prison authorities involved; he was transported to court from a military base in a bulletproof and bombproof van for an unusual Sunday night hearing.
Wearing a black hoodie, trousers and flip-flops, Kinahan told the three-judge panel he understood the charges but had no lawyer, saying he had been isolated in Dubai since Friday. He was remanded in custody and later moved to the high-security Portlaoise Prison.
The extradition followed a final ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation and was carried out under an extradition treaty between the UAE and Ireland, according to a joint statement by both countries' justice ministers.
Kinahan, who was arrested in Dubai in April on an Irish warrant, is due to appear before the court again in person or via video link on October 5, with any bail application required through the High Court.
